Explain Your Professional Background Briefly What Lead You To Build The Company And How Did You Come Up With The Idea?

I am a graduate in Computer Science from IIIT-A. It was 2015, I had gone to my hometown, Patna, during a break during my final semester. Olacabs was recently launched in Patna. I booked a ride from Patna Junction to my home. When I reached, the fare automatically got deducted from my Ola Money. Mobile Payment was relatively a new concept back then. I was highly impressed by the payment experience. I imagined what if I could pay in a similar manner at a street-food stall. It seemed magical! That moment the idea of KHAALIJEB was born

What Difference Are You Creating For Your Customers?

At shoppers’ end, we provide a secure and quick substitute mode of payment for cash. At students’ end, we provide financial relief by offering them exclusive deals and discounts on almost whatever they shop, devising a reliable loyalty program. For brands and merchants, we provide a direct medium for interaction and advertising with student customers at a very low CAC enhancing their brand loyalty.

Tell Us About Your Business And How Is It Changing The Conventional Way?

Khaalijeb is an UPI based application created with a motto of offering most seamless payment mechanism for both P2P and P2B. We have also built ,Student Loyalty Program under which we provide exclusive deals and discounts to students from different brands and also provides a foolproof platform for engagements between brands and students.

What Challenges Do You Face/Facing Within The Market And The Company?

Some of the challenges which we faced within the market are:
•Tackling the tough competition among multiple players working on similar concept
•Going along without offering cashbacks to attract customers due to lack of funds
•Dependency on third party
•Management of expenses without any concrete financial backup
•Lack of experience and mentorship
•Sustaining a robust cyber security
•Coping up with the rapid technological advancements and demand for rapid growth
•Convincing the brands and merchants to come onboard for our Student Loyalty Program.
•Exhaustion of all the free cloud sources and other free resources
•Repeated expenditure of recurring app security checks and audits

How Much Has The Company Changed Since You Started Off?

In the beginning, we wanted to create the most seamless mobile payment experience. We deviced idea of assigning unique IDs to every store and called it JEB No. We started crafting the product & contacting different banks with our proposal. One of those days, we came across the news about NPCI developing UPI. We found UPI to be quite similar to our idea, but far more innovative. So we dropped our idea & started building our product around UPI. When UPI launched, we started working with a leading bank for UPI integration. We were also researching for the features alongside payments. One day, in KFC, we saw a box with a message, “Drop your business card for discounts”. I said to the guy at the counter, “You give corporates discounts on their business cards. Why don’t you give students discounts on their ID cards?” He replied, “You should ask the company. We’ll definitely pass your feedback”. In his words, I sensed the business opportunity, the Student Loyalty Program.

Anything else you want to tell about your Startup?

We got placed during college placement but we quit our jobs and started working on Khaalijeb during the final year of our college. Starting few months, we worked from college itself then shifted our base to Bangalore. After few unfruitful attempts to tie up with a bank as our banking partner, we finally got one – Kotak Mahindra Bank, and still working with the same. This has been a beautiful journey full of struggles and hardships, but also gave us life lessons on patience, hard work, friendships, comradery, work ethics and some of the most unforgettable moments of our lives. We learnt how to manage life in times of adversities and financial problems, and how to create lifehacks making the best use of available resources and freebies.
Currently we are in the beta testing phase and will be launching the app in the coming few days on Google Playstore with basic UPI features like send & request money and merchant payments. Student Loyalty Program will be launched in a couple of months with more than 1000 restaurants and salon and huge brands like KFC, McDonals, CCD, Dominos, etc on-boarded. In future we see ourselves as the representor of a huge student community where brands could approach us directly to get the access the unlimited student market. Apart from this, we also look forward to expand to multiple countries and create life simplifying features for students like Insurance and Bank.
